Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise as it works out more muscle groups than any other sport, toning the body whilst giving it a cardiovascular workout.
Swimming has been found to:
• Develop strength and flexibility
• Enhance muscular stamina and balance
• Help control weight
• Relieve the mind from stress and tension
• Improve posture and limberness
• Increase blood circulation
• Reduce joint stiffness, high blood pressure
Anyone can enjoy the benefits of swimming but it is particularly good for:
• Individuals with lower back/leg/joint problems: Unlike other sports, swimming does not put strain on connective tissues.
• Pregnant women: Swimming strengthens the abdominal and back muscles which help carry the baby. It also relaxes the body and can alleviate discomfort felt by pregnant women.
• Overweight individuals: Swimming does burn calories and does improve your fitness. However, swimming is not the best activity to lose weight as the body doesn't need to use calories to cool down. Running and cycling are better for shedding the pounds though they are high impact activities. Alternating between swimming and a high impact activity will bring benefits to your physique.
Swimming is an accessible activity as you don't need much training to learn how to swim and it doesn't require much sport paraphernalia. All you need is a pool, your body and off you go!
